Project: Sydney Olympic Park Red Zone
Organisation: Aspect Studios for Sydney Olympic Park Authority
Year: 2018–2019
Place: Sydney
Project Type: Curating and Programming, Culture-led placemaking
In 2018–2019, City People collaborated with Aspect Studios on the Sydney Olympic Park Red Zone Public Domain Plan and produced a place activation strategy for the area. Sydney Olympic Park is a major event destination but also a burgeoning dense city environment with the development of the Carter Street and proposed Town Centre precincts. Our collaboration with Aspect Studios included providing strategic direction on activation for the changing precinct around ANZ Stadium in the heart of Sydney’s iconic Olympic Park.
The vision for the Red Zone is for a public domain that is active, optimistic and innovative. City People provided recommendations regarding public art works, artist-led interpretations, markets, education offerings and guidelines for integrating live music and performance into the life of the public domain. Our strategy focused on emphasising a ‘human scale’ identity for the place to support Aspect Studios’ vision of the Red Zone as an exciting and inviting destination worth spending time in, rather than solely being a through route between the arena and surrounding facilities, residences and transport.
