Health Infrastructure is redeveloping the John Hunter Health Campus to deliver more facilities and provide additional capacity to meet the demands of northern NSW regions. The NSW Government has invested $835 million in the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct project. The redevelopment will include a new seven-storey Acute Services Building and a new Emergency Department to meet projected future demand.

City People is responsible for the curatorial masterplan and art strategy, along with the artistic briefs for the arts commissions.

Our scope also includes engagement and curatorial development for the hospital’s ‘Connection Spaces’ and the NEXUS Unit.

Objectives

As the arts consultant for the JHHIP, City People’s role was to create the precinct curatorial masterplan and an arts strategy to guide delivery of projects integrated into the JHH refurbishment. The arts strategy focused on the arts opportunities arising in the build program for John Hunter Hospital.

The core components of the Arts Strategy included:

  • Five identified opportunities for arts integration as part of the JHH refurbishment and the construction of
    the ASB.
  • Other significant opportunities that have come to light throughout the stakeholder engagement.
  • Recommendations to assist in the development of the arts for health program at JHH.
